19:40 The story of a city in the shadow of an old Soviet Union nuclear reactor

The city is 35 kilometers from the bustling capital of Armenia, Yerevan. Metsamor is a stone's throw from snowy Mount Ararat, across from the Turkish border.

Meanwhile, the nuclear power plant at Metsamor was built simultaneously with Chernobyl, in the 1970s.

Chernobyl, a power plant in the city of Pripyat, Ukraine, exploded in 1986 and is considered the biggest nuclear tragedy because it affected the lives of tens of thousands of Soviet citizens and its surroundings.

The nuclear plant at Metsamor met the Soviet Union's growing energy needs. At that time, the Soviets had ambitious plans to meet 60% of their country's electricity needs from nuclear power.

Everything changed in 1988, when a magnitude 6.8 earthquake rocked Spitak, devastated Armenia and killed an estimated 25,000 people.

The plant was immediately closed for security reasons. As a result, many workers returned to their hometowns in Poland, Ukraine and Russia.

Thirty years later, the existence and future of the Metsamor nuclear reactor is still a controversial topic in Armenia. One of the plant's reactors was turned on in 1995 and now covers 40% of the country's electricity needs.

Critics believe that the nuclear power plants and reactors are still very vulnerable to earthquakes. The reason is that the location is busy with seismic activity.

By contrast, proponents of the plant, including government officials, say Metsamor was built on blocks of stable basalt rock. They said further modifications had also been made at the nuclear site, including the installation of fire doors.

But amidst the ongoing bickering, the lives of the people who live and work in Metsamor continue to roll on.

The city was built to attract workers from all over the Soviet Union, from the Baltics to Kazakhstan. Metsamor is designed to accommodate 36 thousand residents, complete with an artificial lake, sports facilities and a cultural center.

At the peak of its heyday, the shops in Metsamor had a complete supply of basic necessities. News of Metsamor's high-quality butter also reached Yerevan.

When the earthquake occurred, the city's construction stopped and the lake became empty. Two months later, the Soviet government decided to shut down the nuclear power plant.

Disruption of the energy supply due to the destruction of the system in a number of Caucasian regions means that it is no longer possible for the plant to operate safely. The people who live in Metsamor end up living in a semi-finished town with few job opportunities.

However, the population of the city of Metsamor has actually increased. In the same year as the earthquake, refugees started arriving from Azerbaijan who had fled the conflict in the mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

In the first year of the conflict, more than 450 people lived in the empty Metsamor hostel. They eventually settled down and now live in houses they built themselves.

The settlement stands on land that was planned to become the third residential complex of Atomograd.

The Armenian government faces a crisis after the Metsamor nuclear plant is shut down. They are forced to share the available energy equally for each region, a maximum of one hour per day.

This was valid until a new decision was taken in 1993. The Armenian government revived the two reactor units located at Metsamor, following strict trials. The reactor is working but needs some updating.

"Our VVR reactor design is rather old. For example, we don't have cement containment domes to contain the blast debris," said Ara Marjanyan, an energy expert at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Even so, Marjanyan said the generator had proven to survive the devastating earthquake in Spitak. The site is also said to be one of the few nuclear power plants that passed the pressure test after the Fukushima tragedy in Japan in 2011.

Currently, Metsamor is home to around 10,000 residents, including children. In an apartment complex 5 kilometers from a nuclear cooling tower, local residents weigh fears over the scarcity of energy sources and the potential for a nuclear disaster.

"Those dark years when there was no electricity left a deep impression on people's minds," said Katharina Roters, a photographer who has documented life at Mestamor for many years.

"They can't imagine life without the power plant," Roters said. From 1991 to 1994, Armenia suffered from an energy crisis. At that time, the people of that country did not have a source of electricity at all.

Currently the town of Metsamor is in need of repairs, especially the roofs of the housing which are leaking and the many former engine radiators which need to be cut out to be converted into seats.

Hirohito, the 142nd Emperor of Japan, played a major role in many historical events. This man, who is also known by his posthumous name Emperor Showa, was the emperor with the longest reign in Japanese history, from 1926 to 1989. Under his leadership, Japan was involved in various wars. Starting from the Manchuria Incident (1931), the Nanking Incident (1937), World War II, and Pearl Harbor. During his reign, Japan also invaded several countries, such as Indonesia, South Korea, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Burma and Malaya.

Hirohito or Michinomiya Hirohito was born at Aoyama Castle, Tokyo, April 29, 1901. He was the first son of Emperor Yoshihito and Empress Teimei. Hirohito was educated at Peers and the Crown Prince Institute. In his youth, he was interested in developing marine biology. Starting from there, Hirohito then began to write several books. In 1921, Hirohito went to Europe. He became the first Japanese crown prince to go abroad. After returning to Japan, he was made Prince Regent, after his father retired due to mental illness.

The Japanese army began an artillery barrage on the Chinese garrison the next day. Within five months of the Mukden Incident, Japanese imperial troops had invaded all the major cities in the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang.

Hirohito's era was also marked by the Nanking Incident, which occurred on December 13, 1937 to January 1938. The Nanking Incident was a mass killing and mass rape by the Japanese army against the residents of Nanking, which became the capital of China at that time. La Liga TV broadcasters said there had been an announcement in the stadium asking fans not to insult players or throw objects onto the pitch. The official report also described the racist insult as occurring in the 73rd minute’ shouted at him: ‘Monkey, monkey’ then play was stopped until the announcement was broadcast over the stadium loudspeakers.

MOSCOW – Secretary of Russia’s Security Council Nikolai Patrushev warned on Friday (19/5/2023) that a radioactive cloud was headed for Western Europe after the destruction of a Ukrainian warehouse holding British-supplied depleted uranium munitions. Sputnik News spoke with Dr Chris Busby, physical chemist and scientific secretary of the European Committee on Radiation Risk, about how the West’s decision to provide depleted uranium (DU) munitions to Ukraine has the potential to cause a continent-wide ecological disaster. Below is the full answer. “Recently, several media outlets showed a video of a huge explosion in the town of Khmelnitski, which is located west of Kiev, and about 200 km from the border with Poland. There were two huge explosions which produced huge rotating fireballs, like an atomic bomb, expands upwards and forms a mushroom cloud, which is black. I have represented veterans of nuclear atmosphere tests at the Royal Courts of Justice in London and have seen many films about nuclear explosions: this was not one of them. Nuclear explosions are characterized by an immediate intense white light that erases camera or detector film.So what was it?Some commentators have suggested the weapons depot that was hit by the attack contained Depleted Uranium (DU) weapons that Britain was shipping to Ukraine for use in Britain’s Challenger tanks as anti-tank penetrators.That the explosion involved one of them burning DU in a fireball. Since I am a scientific authority on Uranium and its health effects, but have also examined its distribution and behavior in the environment, I will comment on what I believe is happening, and why it matters. I was a member of the UK government’s Ministry of Defense Depleted Uranium Oversight Board (DUOB) 2000-2005, as well as the UK Government’s Committee Examining the Risk of Radiation from Internal Transmitters (CERRIE) 2000-2004.I am the Scientific Secretary of the European Committee on the Risks of Radiation (ECRR) which is an independent NGO advising on the risks from ionizing radiation. My main research interest in this area is Uranium and health, particularly DU particles, which are so small that they act as a gas and travel great distances after being generated by the combustion of DU. I found them in England in 2003 after they came from Iraq. I found them in 2023 in England after they had come from the Ukrainian war. So that’s a first: materials are capable of traveling great distances. Therefore, if the Khmelnitsky explosion was a DU explosion, the material would be downwind and should be detectable at the downwind monitor locations. First we need to say DU has a gamma sign, it gives off gamma rays. The UK and US governments are lying about this. They pointed to the fact that U-238, which remained after the fissile U-235 was removed from the centrifuges (and sent for the nuclear weapons and reactors), was a weak alpha emitter. They say alpha radiation cannot penetrate the skin so DU itself is harmless. It cannot be detected by the Geiger Counter and the alpha particles do not make it through the window. What you need to know is that Uranium 238, when it decays with its alpha emissions, turns into Thorium-234 and Protoactinium-234m which then turns into Uranium 234. Thorium 234 is a beta and gamma emitter giving off 6% of its decay energy as gamma rays. Thus, large clouds of DU particulate aerosols will be detectable by the gamma detector.

Inter Milan has ensured qualification for the 2022/2023 Champions League Final. This was after the Nerazzurri won 1-0 over AC Milan in the semi-final second leg.

In the match that was held at the Giuseppe Meazza, Wednesday (17/5/2023) early morning WIB, Inter did lose control 44 percent to 56 percent.

However, they were sharper by making 15 attempts, four of which led to goals against Milan's five and one on goal.

Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal in this match as well as bringing La Beneamata to qualify for the Champions League top party with a 3-0 aggregate victory. Manchester City or Real Madrid will be Inter's opponents next month

Inter tried to take the initiative to attack from the early minutes in order to maintain a two-goal advantage. Meanwhile, Milan replied through the aggressiveness of Rafael Leao on the left side of the attack.
